Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter

Title: Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter (Our mothers, our fathers)
Type: TV-Miniseries
Aired: 2013
Produced by: ZDF
Duration: 3 episodes of 90 minutes each

I recently took the time to watch the TV-show that has drawn many positive and negative headlines by portraying the lives of 5 German friends during World War II from Berlin. The show caused a lot of tension with Poland, due to a harsh portrayal of Polish Partisans.

If you disregard all the politics surrounding the show and just watch it though, you are in for one hell of a ride. Germans and Germany have come very far to be able to make and produce such a vivid and direct show about what happened during World War II. It’s without any or at least extremely small amounts of beautification of the truth and shows a lot of harsh scenes both at the front, behind the front and in Germany itself. The treatment of Jews, war crimes and many other fascinating and terrifying events take place in the 4½ hours the show lasts.

Our mothers our-fathers

I’m not going to review the show, but I’m going to fully recommend watching it! It’s simply a must-see. It has been called the German Band of Brothers, without actually being like Band of Brothers at all, but it has a fantastic story and the various scenes and character developments, keep you hooked throughout the show. At least that’s what happened to me. I saw the first episode and then I couldn’t forget about the show and had to watch the next two episodes as soon as I can.

I’m deeply impressed and also incredibly saddened by what happened during the show and World War II. This just shows me that we are heading for a time where Germans can express what happened without having to bend the truth or lie. Truly great!
