I’ve been putting off playing World of Tanks for a long time. I tried it briefly waaay back and wasn’t really convinced, but then I got the urge to play and got it set up and it’s actually really fun! I always had the impression that the game was kinda expensive and not that fun to play. I like tanks though, so I thought I might as well give it a try!

The first thing I did when I got into World of Tanks, is to get a little overwhelmed with the considerable amount of stuff I had to understand. There’s crew percentage training, different tanks, hull armor vs penetration of ammo, ammo types, huge tank “tech” trees, ammunition refilling and tank repair, skinning, individual tank research and the bunch of tanks I started out with.

At some point I just decided to buckle down and start playing with some of my tanks. This luckily has the beneficial effect of quickly removing all the clutter and sending you into a random mission with tanks of the same Tier as yourself. You enter these 15 minute capture the enemy base, capture a neutral base or kill all the enemies games, that usually last around 15 minutes and are quick and easy to fight out!

So with so many choices after being in the simple world, what do you do? I decided to focus mainly on German tanks and selling the weird Tier 1 tanks that I didn’t really like and use the slots for my higher Tier tanks from Germany. I decided to focus on the Tank Destroyer branch which includes Marder II, Hetzer and Stug III. I just unlocked the Stug III and compared to the Hetzer, it’s more maneuverable, but it doesn’t yet pack the punch of the fully upgraded Hetzer tank.

So far I haven’t spend a single dime on the game and I know I could speed everything up immensely if I did, but somehow it’s very satisfying playing my way through the various Tiers. My next tank will be a Jagd Panzer IV and I’m fine with it taking a long time to unlock.

World of Tanks appeals to me, because it works smoothly and has reached a good balance between earning and being able to just unlock instantly. Also because it has a lot of tanks!
